Hello my costumed comrades
So this year I really couldn't decide between a few choice ideas for Halloween so I thought I'd consult my fellow Saloners. This year its all about looking back it seems. Whether it be to your childhood, classic film images or to a general era that no longer is. So your job, is to weigh in on which costume idea you like best. Your choices: Rainbow Brite, 70's Roller Girl, or Classic Jailbird. Let me know what you think! To help I have included some images of how I would interpret these ideas:

First is Rainbow Brite, a classic and beloved cartoon character from my youth. I would try and spin this in a more cute and not so much slutty direction, as it is vaguely creepy to sluttify cute cartoon children (yikes).
This is, of course, an idea I had last year that never came to fruition b/c of the genius clue characters theme. But I thought it was good enough to reconsider for this year. Really I just love coming up with ways to wear those sucks and my romper (love it).
Finally we have what I consider a classic Halloween option that I've always enjoyed and yet never seriously considered till now. I have no clue how I would swing the ball and chain or hand cuffs. I mean, does anybody have these lying around? I didn't think so. And one priority of this year's Halloween is slim to no budget for buying things. My goal is use what I already have in creative ways!
SO let me know what you all think and I guess everyone will see what I decide on October 31st!

What's YOUR Halloween Costume?

Maybe it's a little premature, Halloween being a month away and all, but I got really jazzed. Guess who's going to be Joan Holloway from Mad Men this year.... Yeah. Me. Anyone want to help me dye my hair and shop for jewelry? :)

So what are you going to be? Post your pictures and comments. Let the planning begin! Read More......

Salon Event: Oscar Pool

The Oscars are this Sunday Night so it's time to put some money on it. Everyone who wants in, contribute 5 bucks to the pot, fill out your ballot--in pen, before the show--and watch the 81st annual Academy Awards at 8pm on ABC.
Since I may not see all of you, make a comment on this page that says if you're in or not, and post your prediction for Best Picture, to so we know that you've picked your winners. The person/people with the most right answers win the pot.

Here's a copy of the ballot-->
http://www.chiff.com/art/movies/oscar-pool-sheet.htm

Also, if you want in on the Fashion pool, contribute 2 more dollars and post a comment that lists your picks for best and worst dressed man and woman of the night. Whoever gets closest to the choices picked by E!'s fashion police (results on E!, and E! Online) gets the winnings from that pool.

So hawk up 7$ and get to voting on Sunday! Read More......

Virtual Invitation!

I am here to propose a different kind of salon event then is the usual. I invite you all to join me in a virtual tea party on Polyvore / our Blog! Here's how it's going to go down, if you choose to join in. If you haven't already, you will need to make a Polyvore account. After that's done, all you need to do is make a Tea Party inspired set! I suggest putting the outfit you would wear, some item that you think belongs at our tea party (it can be TOTALLY random - no need to bring a tea pot, I've provided that), maybe whatever tea cup you want, and the chair that you would want to use at the tea party. After you've made your set, just come back to the salon, and edit this post to include your set so all of our tea party images will be together and we can see what our collective, virtual tea party would be like!

Salon Event!

I had an idea for a salon event the other day. It could always correspond with Personal Icon month, or it could just be a free-standing salon event if we don't want to wait that long to do it. We can collectively decide that I guess. So I will explain the idea after the cut, but I will give you a little hint before the cut. :)

So my idea is to have a "Personal Style" event. Right about now you might be thinking - What in heck are you talking about Amy? Hold your horses - I'll tell you (I just realized that his post is sounding more and more like an informercial. Damn).

It is my belief that everyone has a very personalized sense of style - it's just that it's hard to see it from where you stand. It is also my belief that if someone is interested, they could really benefit (stylistically speaking) from knowing what that style is, and how they can use it to create a defined and cohesive life. So my idea is to have an all out event where we all just sit down and, through various style exercises, figure out what our most basic sense of style is (or at least what we wish it was).

I'll give you some examples of what kind of exercises I mean. 1. - write down words that you wish reflected you (I'll guarantee you that you already have clothes/other lifestyle routines that reflect those words). 2. - create a pictorial list of people who's style you always like/clothes you really really love/etc. 3. - make a list of all of the clothes you can remember from your life that you have loved an obscene amount. (i.e. you think I have a love of nautical things for no reason? four words - kitty cat sailor dress.) There will be other such exercises as well, I just haven't thought of them yet.

Besides the style exercises, we could maybe watch a very stylish movie (like Contempt which I just watched and will be the inspiration for my summer wardrobe this year, or maybe some movie that is less French. And with less of Brigitte Bardot's ass.) And maybe we could eat some stylish snacks. Like...... chocolate tuxedo strawberries? Idk - we can work on that if you all decide you are interested in having such an event. So just let me know what you all think!

A Call to Arms!

Forgive me book club for I have sinned. It has been two months since I've read a book for the book club. I officially suck. I haven't even been able to finish Scoop yet, which I had hoped to do in the past two months! Sigh.... So I am deciding right here and now that I am not going to worry about reading Brideshead Revisited. I am still going to try and read it, but I won't feel bad if I don't get to it. I am just going to concentrate on finishing Scoop and being good from here on out! I think it will be easy for me to do that because this month is style month!!!

I am very very excited about this months books. Cary Grant my love - lead me back to the straight and narrow! King of kings, troubadour of sartorial elegance, sexy beast. I wish I could go back in time and be your first, second, third, fourth, or even your fifth wife. But sadly, I will have to content myself just with reading about you. And I have to come clean here - I was SO excited about this book that when I bought it early last month, I couldn't help but start reading it. But I was able to stop myself after the first couple chapters!

And Marie Antoinette, you're pretty cool too. But honestly I don't wish I could go back in time and be you. So really I'm happy to just be reading about you this month.

So let's all get excited about this month of style and hope that it rejuvinates the book club! In fact, I hope you all took the time to read to the end of this post, because here, in these last few sentences, I am going to propose a Salon event in which we celebrate this awesome month and watch Marie Antionette, and one or more Cary Grant movies. I have the feeling we'll want to anyway after reading these books, and then we will be able to discuss their style in an educated fashion. So let's do it! Viva la salon! Read More......

Event Update: Lawn Sport Olympics

Quick update on the lawn sport olympics:
I was unfortunetly unable to find a croquet set (because I waited too long and now don't think it'll arrive in time). So, that event is scrapped until next years Lawn Sport Olympics (because unlike the lame Olympics we will have ours annually). So now the events are Bocce Ball, Badminton, and Horseshoes. Still sounds totally awesome, I know. Hope everyone is getting geered up and is putting some quality thought into their outfit (don't forget there will be wardrobe awards as well). See everyone soon! Salon Event?

Ok, so Glynnis and I were just checking up on what movies they will be showing at the Fox Theatre for the Coca-Cola film festival for the rest of the summer. Here's what it looks like - On July 13 they will be showing Enchanted at 2:00 and then also on July 13 they will be showing Ben-Hur, along with a wine tasting (all for $10) at 7:00. So we are both interested in going to see one of these movies, but we could see the pros and cons for both.

Enchanted: PROS: Good Movie, Good to sing-along to, Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden
CONS: A lot of kids

Ben-Hur: PROS: Wine Tasting, Classic Movie, Charelton Heston's smooth acting skills.. and chest.
CONS: LONG movie in pretty uncomfortable chairs.

So we put it to the public. Would you guys be able to come, and if so, which movie would you prefer? Majority rules. No Pressure. Read More......

Blog cuts and more inspiration! And a test of sorts.

I THINK I may have figured out how to do a blog cut on our posts. So it took me a while to figure this out, and a few tries in editing the html of the blog layout, but I think that this is the best option for what we want out of a blog cut. So here's the deal - when you go to post a new post on the blog, you will notice some new text that is already in the box where you would normally type your entry. Where it says "Type your summary here" - you just replace that line with all of the text and pictures that you want to show on the regular blog. Where it says "Type rest of the post here" - is where you type all of the text and pictures that you want to appear in the cut. Just make sure not to delete any of the stuff in brackets and keep the bracketed lines where they are.

So if you DON'T want your post to have a cut, then just delete everything that's in the posting box when you go to write a new post so that the posting box is just blank like it would have been before, and just post like you normally would.

I hope I'm explaining all of this clearly - it might be a little confusing. If you're confused about anything, then just ask. I'm going to test this out a little with this post to see if it all works etc. So hopefully I'll know any answers to any questions you guys might have.

So, now that I've posted all of this technical stuff, here are some early 1900's sportswear looks that I find to be extremely inspirational whilst deciding what to wear for the lawn sport olympics - after the cut! (I hope! lol)

It's Going to Be a Thing : Lawn Sport Olympics

So some exciting things have been announced today via Allison. Lawn Sport Olympics 2008! Is everyone excited? I know I am!!

Allison and I discussed it a little bit, and I think that she and I were in agreement that an event with such a prestigious nature as this deserves - nay - DEMANDS that it's participants pay it its due respect in every fashion. Yes, that is right - in Fashion. No, you are not mistaking my meaning. Allison was so kind as to allow me (or rather I should maybe just hope that I wasn't too annoying in just assigning myself the privilege) to come up with the dress code for this blessed event.

So as we all know - the Lawn Sport Olympics have a proud history. It is said that while Hercules was creating the first olympic games as far back as 776 BCE, his younger brother, the lesser known deity Dante (god of the dandies), was right next door creating his own olympic event - The Lawn Sport olympics. While it may seem unfortunate to some that our chosen event came about from a younger sibling being relegated to the back lawn while his older bro took up the whole damn arena leaving no room for his brother's chosen sports - we know it is not so. Only the true olympians understand that a real sport is one in which you can take the time to enjoy a glass of lemonade while making sure that your patent leather shoes do not get damaged or soiled. How many olympic sports can boast that? Plus, Dante got the last laugh when badminton somehow snuck itself into the "Real" olympics anyway. And by the way - have you seen the way they've bastardized the sport over there - they've made it high-speed and competative! We can take pride knowing that we play badminton in it's pure state.

So anyway - enough with the history lesson. On to the dress code! (And of course - feel free to make your own dress code suggestions!)

No. 1 - The majority of your clothing must be white. You could wear a white shirt, or white shorts or skirt, or even a white and say... yellow allover striped onsie (no no no Allison, I know what you're thinking, but honestly that is just a totally random, hypothetical, example. Not at ALL based on any real articles of clothing which may or may not be worn to the Lawn Sport Olympics. I haven't decided on that anyway - it's just an option). Let's just say that as a rule of thumb, about 50% of you should be covered in white.

No. 2 - Any color worn besides white must be a tasteful neutral or pastel. Dark colors would just be ridiculous - we're playing outside and we don't want to risk attracting the suns rays - then we might end up sweating. Yucky.

No. 3 - NO ATHLETIC SHOES ALLOWED! No sneakers or tennis shoes, or whatever you may call them. We are playing LAWN SPORTS people!! Only sandals, oxfords, or what have you will be permitted. Heck, you could even go barefoot if you really want to I guess.

Finally - take pride in your appearance. We have the honor of upholding a noble tradition, and our appearances should reflect so.

I will leave you with a little inspiration. Here are two pictures from the 1908 Olympic Tennis events (from the website www.olympics.org.uk). 1908 was apparently the year that it was trendy to pretend that you were playing in the Lawn Sport Olympics rather than the "real ones" - but whatever was the reason for these tennis players to wear such glorious clothes, I suppose does not matter, for they are worthy fashion icons and I for one plan to follow their example.

Happy dressing you all! After all, we know that dressing the part is the unofficial sport of the Lawn Sport Olympics.

Summertime awaits us!

Alright, so, I'm not certain if you all are aware of this but we live in a major city, a hub, an awesome metropolis full of constant activities to partake in and festivals and shopping and dining pleasures. Atlanta is practically orgasmic in terms of what we offer. Trust me- I've definitely realized it in my traveling, let's just say other states' "large cities" don't have squat on ours. Excepting Los Angeles and New York, I'm sure. Also allow the fact, that I've never been to New York but L.A. doesn't really boast a lot of trees- I enjoy our humble shade, winding roads with marvelous oaks on each side- roots ruining the roads as the pop on through. Might be a personal preference, but deal. I've rambled and there IS a point to this.

SUMMER!

We are about to begin the best time to live here in the city. Summer and it's festivals and movies and discounted soft drinks from QT (69 CENTS!!!)

So, I have collected, for your viewing pleasure a list of summer things activities that are available to us in the city.

Screen On The Green- held in Centennial Olympic Park this year due to drought.
