Might I Suggest a Mash-up?: Buffy and Betty

Welcome to a new media segment I'm going to call "Might I Suggest a Mash-up?" (as you may have noticed).

This weeks mash-up? Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Betty Draper...

Ever noticed how similar they look? Well, who's to say that Buffy's slaying predecessor wasn't a fussy, tight-lipped woman from the 50s/60s? I mean, slayers aren't known for having the longest life expectancy. It could have happened.

So here's the show: Betty Draper moves away (already happened), when she meets an older, wiser gent who tells her that she's got a destiny (a spin-off show)in which she's a rockin' vampire slayer (maybe FOX is jonesin' to get into the vampire market?).

Your mission: recommend songs for the soundtrack. Anything from the 50s/60s and even the 90s and today that could add some style to the show. Mash-ups preferred!!

My Mission: to recommend some research to you. If you're interested in vampire/history mash-ups, check out the new book "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" by Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. (I know I will!)

Halloween Magic....

With such fabulous costume ideas already on the board, this year's halloween costume decision has been a tough one. How can I be glam? How can I be unique? How can I be just a little bit skanky... So in my decision-making process, I had to consider my past (but really, the Black Plague can't be topped so I shouldn't be too hard on myslef) and a potential complement costume with a Lego man. Polly Pocket? I think not. Not good enough.
So, after a little bit of searching online, here is what I came up with, and I love it!

Caberet-esque magician!

The real inspiration here is the sexy magician costume I found on a Party City-like website. I love any excuse to wear fishnets, though I am wary of the hot shorts. I thank Casey for suggesting bringing in inspiration from Caberet and the ever theatrical Columbia from Rocky Horror. All in all, it should be a good season.
Be jealous. Go on. Read More......

Summer Movie Review

So I hope everyone had a fun 4th of July yesterday! I went and saw Wall-E yesterday and it was SO good that I HAD to write about it on the blog.

I have to say that I think Wall E was the best movie I've seen all year, and is without a doubt the best movie Pixar has ever come out with. First of all I had to keep reminding myself that I was watching an animated movie - otherwise I would have thought it was real. The animation was that realistic - and not only that, it was absolutely magical looking in the parts when they were out in space. Wall-E was a real treat for the eyes.

Not only should Pixar be commended on their animation prowess in this movie, but also on the very important message they relayed through this movie. Being as vague as possible so I don't give any of the plot away - there was so much social commentary packed into this film - all of it legitimate and extremely important for our society to see. I left this movie feeling like I needed to really commit myself to helping solve the problems I see in our world. It was such a positive experience. Pixar really mixed the perfect amount of depression over what could be happening to our world right now, with of course the uplifiting ending making you think that all is not lost! But Wall-E forces you to own up that all surely will be lost if we don't start acting now.

And even if Wall-E didnt have such an important message, it would STILL be absolutely adorable! Wall-E is totally my favorite Pixar character ever. He's just so sweet! And of course - knowing that I love the movie Hello Dolly, especially the song Put On Your Sunday Clothes, I was extremely happy to see it be featured so much in the movie.

Moral of the story : EVERYONE NEEDS TO GO SEE WALL-E!!!! Read More......

Helvetica

So I just watched the documentary Helvetica. So after Allison and Ashley quit laughing at me, I was able to actually hear the movie, and from then on, I realized that it was amazing!!!!! I am realizing that I am totally a typographile and I wish I knew more about it. It's a very good documentary - so put it on your netflix cues. It really inspired me and I think it gave me quite a different focus for my directed study. I don't know if that's good or bad, but whatever.

File this one under the finer things portion of the blog. Prepare for this (being typography) to become a new obsession of mine. You've been warned. Read More......
